LIFE with Sickle Cell Disease

(Learning Is Fundamental for Everyone)

Our book drive is still ongoing! However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, please do not mail book donations to Howard University Hospital at this time, but hold them for a later donation. We are still accepting online donations to purchase books through the donate link below.

We are pleased to announce the receipt of a new grant from the Walter Brownley Trust, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee. This project is entitled "LIFE (Learning Is Fundamental for Everyone) with Sickle Cell Disease" and will focus on educational needs of school age children with sickle cell disease. Goals of the project include:

1) Increasing the capacity of the Family Advocate to assist more patients and families, improving adherence with routine care and evidence-based healthcare guidelines for sickle cell disease.

2) Increase parent and student education on 504 and IEP educational plans and teach advocacy skills to parents to use at the school through one on one meetings with the Family Advocate and  an in-person workshop where families will be invited to attend to receive education about 504 Plan/IEP and the legal assistance process. In addition, parents will be encouraged to share sickle cell resources with teachers and school nurses.

3) Link families to the sickle cell disease community and resources through events, educational materials, conferences, interactive community websites, and distribution of children’s books to families.
